Vitamin C (ascorbic acid) is an essential nutrient involved in many of your body’s functions, including formation of blood vessels and cartilage, absorption and storage of iron, and, of course, boosting immunity. In addition, it’s an antioxidant that helps protect your cells against the effects of free radicals, which are molecules produced when your body breaks down food or is exposed harmful environmental agents, such as UV rays and tobacco smoke. Free radicals might play a role in heart disease, cancer and other diseases, so helping to eliminate them in the body is key to staying well.
High dose vitamin C has been studied in individuals with cancer and in some studies has been shown to slow tumor growth and improve tolerance to chemotherapy. High dose vitamin C has also been studied in autoimmune diseases, such as lupus and rheumatoid arthritis, as a method of reducing chronic inflammation. It may be effective in reducing symptoms associated with Lyme disease. It was also studied during COVID-19 as an accompanying treatment in critically ill individuals, and has been studied as a tool for individuals suffering from post-COVID symptoms, also known as “long-haul COVID”.
