At Rejuvenate MKE, our goal is to help you become a more informed consumer when it comes to your health. We want you to feel empowered through knowledge! Therefore, we wanted to shed some light on one of the most important products that we offer, glutathione, explain what it does, and why it’s essential to your body.
What is glutathione?
Glutathione is a very powerful antioxidant made up largely of three amino acids: glutamine, glycine, and cysteine. It’s made by your body as a tool to fight free radicals.
Antioxidants…free radicals…what?!
Before we get too deep into glutathione, let’s talk about antioxidants. You’ve probably heard about them in the context of certain foods containing “key” or “high amounts” of antioxidants. Berries, green tea, and coffee are all very common sources of antioxidants.
But what is an antioxidant? These are the molecules that fight free radicals in your body. Which leads to the question, what is a free radical? Free radicals are compounds in your body that can cause harm or disease in your body if their levels are too high. Lots of factors can contribute to free radical formation. External factors, such as smoking, consuming alcohol or drugs, and air pollution can increase free radicals in your body. Internal factors like infections can also produce free radicals.
Your body is in a constant state of trying to find balance with free radicals. High levels of free radicals are associated with multiple conditions such as cancer and diabetes. Fortunately, antioxidants are there to help neutralize these free radicals and prevent an excess of free radicals, also known as a state of oxidative stress. In a state of prolonged oxidative stress, your body is at risk for serious conditions, such as cardiovascular disease and cancer.
Back to glutathione…why does it matter?
Of all of the antioxidants in our body that help fight free radicals, glutathione is one of the most important of these. In fact, some have called it the “master antioxidant”. It is involved in many processes in the body, such as detoxification, antiviral defense, immune response, and the folding of proteins. In addition to neutralizing free radicals, some studies have shown that glutathione is useful in improving insulin resistance in older individuals and may help fight against autoimmune diseases.
There are multiple factors that can impact glutathione levels, including poor nutrition, illness, stress, and age; all of these can decrease glutathione levels. This decrease comes at a time when we could often use glutathione; stress and illness increase free radicals and decrease glutathione, which is a major factor in protecting against oxidative stress induced by these free radicals. More and more stress on the body plus less protection (in the form of glutathione) means prolonged illnesses, chronic illnesses, and overall feeling lousy.

Studies have demonstrated the importance of glutathione in protecting against the severe inflammatory response triggered by COVID-19
A study published in 2020 indicates that glutathione is diminished during illness with COVID-19. This same study showed that replenishing levels of glutathione can not only alleviate some of the symptoms of COVID-19, but can also help prevent the disease itself!
Consider adding glutathione to your next treatment with us
Whether you’ve recently been sick, or if you’re trying to prevent illness, consider adding glutathione to your next treatment. Glutathione is administered slowly via an IV after your infusion. It pairs well with our immunity blend, but can be given after any blend for an extra immune boost and detoxifier.
